Relying on a dining hall buffet in college can feel like a constant battle between endless temptations and trying to achieve your health goals, but with some of the smart strategies provided below, your plate can be both satisfying and nourishing.

Salads: Salads can be a great way to get in your recommended vegetable, dairy, and protein intake every day. They come in so many variations to satisfy any craving that might be had. I eat them before any other food at each meal to help fill my stomach/diminish my appetite.

Whole grains: Whole grains provide the energy that allows the human body to perform their everyday tasks, fuel their workouts, and even do as much as prevent disease. They are nutritious and keep you fuller longer than refined grains do. Whole grains can come in the form of whole wheat pasta, whole grain breads, brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, and so much more.

Protein: Protein is vital for every plate because it is essential in building and/or repairing tissues. These include muscles, bones, and skin, which are key components of not only survival, but growth and prosperity for humans. Proteins that are typically found in dining halls include chicken, turkey, pork, and fish. Additionally, protein can be consumed using other means if you are, for example, vegetarian or vegan. Foods like eggs, beans, tofu, and other dietary supplements can be a way to ensure you’re staying balanced without sacrificing your beliefs or simply the way you want to eat.

Fruit: Fruit is my favorite avenue to give into my sweet tooth. For me, I am able to eat as much of it as I want without feeling the guilt I might have if I indulged in a dessert. Fruits I particularly enjoy are strawberries, pineapple, grapes, honeydew, and bananas.

At the end of the day, eating is a dynamic human action. Not everyday is going to be the same and neither will the consumption that accompanies it. Never be too hard on yourself for a bad meal, snack, or treat–it doesn’t define you. Most of all, keep trying your best, you got this!
