Sure, lifting weights will make you stronger, but what if it could also make you braver, bolder, and more unstoppable in everyday life? When I first stepped foot in the gym, I thought I was just there to get in shape. I didn’t realize I was also training the confidence that would change the way I faced the world.

For as long as I could remember, I was considered the “chubby kid” to those who surrounded me. I’m not sure how I gained so much weight at such a young age, but it’s really all I ever knew. For me, food was comfort, food was fun, food was delicious. I got ice cream to celebrate good grades, elaborate Starbucks frappuccinos when hanging out with friends, pizza after school on Fridays, the list goes on. At some point, with serious concern for my health, my mom intervened into my habits. I don’t remember exactly what she said but I know the bottom line was “you need to make a change.”

Those words combined with who said them (an individual who I respect very deeply) ignited a desire to transform in me.

It started slow. For example, I switched from eating burgers and fries to grilled chicken sandwiches and fruit for lunch or I limited the amount of times per week I got dessert, etc.

Accompanying my dietary alterations, I began going to the gym as well. At first, it was incredibly difficult. Quite frankly, I was embarrassed of how little I could do and I wanted to quit entirely. I really kept with it though, my mom’s words in mind, and soon saw huge changes to how I looked, felt, and performed.

Today, I still go to the gym daily. It is so empowering to have the ability to shape how I am seen. At the end of the day, I stay fit for my younger self, present self and future self who has infinite potential in front of her.
